Seoul is a fantastic city, even with jetlag! But when you find yourself stuck in a hotel room far away from home, just about to embark on a three-week-long self-funded trip to create a travel documentary about a new country, even in a mega-city like Seoul (which is full of friendly souls and smiling faces) self-doubt can creep in. And if this is left to fester, worse, the Black Dog can arrive, along with his friend, Imposter Syndrome, and this combination of negativity can soon become a filmmaker or photographer’s biggest challenge on assignment.

Just one year ago, I embarked on a journey to South Korea, a land that is rich in culture and history. Working as a photojournalist, you sometimes find yourself covering stories the entire world is talking about and in 2003, the Iraq War was on everybody's minds. On a very hot summers day in August, I was sent on assignment to the Royal Navy Base in Portsmouth to photograph the return of HMS Liverpool.

Photographing traditional and often long-forgotten cultural events and festivals is something photographers like me love to document. These local traditions vary from region to region and, often here in the UK, are specific to a county, town or even a village. Steeped in history and often a little quirky, these cultural festivities are usually kept alive by a small group of dedicated people who are determined the customs from the past should not be forgotten.

Along with my work as a photographer, I also love to create storytelling videos to promote my client's services or products, but this recent video project was slightly different. Littlehampton Town Council hired me to create this tourism video to highlight the fantastic attractions the town offers and to promote it as a perfect destination for a family staycation.

The ability to blend into the background and create photographs discreetly is sometimes a real challenge for a documentary photographer. Being 6 feet tall and sporting a beard and moustache sometimes makes it particularly tricky for me, but it's all part of the fun.

It's not every day you get the opportunity to photograph a reconnaissance mission with the British Army, but that's precisely what I found myself doing during this commercial photography shoot.

Travelling the world with my camera allows me to meet some great people and document some wonderful cultural events. Whilst photographing the Fallas celebrations in Denia, I stumbled across a beautiful traditional flower parade on the last day.

Some people call it street photography, others reportage, candid or documentary photography.

I've often thought that a career as a professional photographer has some similarities to a career in the music industry. Odd, you might think but stick with me! Having photographed Mel C, Bon Jovi, Elton John, Stereophonics and the Manic Street Preachers, all in concert. I've definitely noticed similarities.
